Tell Grocers: Mark the Way to Fruits & Veggies!

Eating healthy food helps Latino kids grow up at a healthy weight. 

But many supermarkets push families to unhealthy food via marketing and placement, and fail to highlight healthier options like fruits and veggies.

Sign this letter asking your state’s grocer association to send a memo to all stores encouraging implementation of marketing strategies to promote fruit and veggie options for Latino families!

Marketing, placement, and store design strategies can promote purchases of fruits and veggies. 

For example, stores can: add large green arrows on the floor to guide customers to fruits and vegetables; use green stickers or other labeling to denote nutritious options; and many other study-proven ways to increase the purchase of fruits and veggies.

Be sure to tell your state’s grocery store association to use their power, connections, and support services to work with stores to emphasize fruit and veggie options!

Making the healthy choice the easy choice for all families is a vital part of the effort to reduce high rates of obesity, especially among Latinos, and promote a healthy weight for kids.

When I shop for food, the prominent placement and marketing of unhealthy foods makes it harder for me to find affordable, healthy options like fruits and vegetables. How you market a particular food product has a strong influence on what types of food we buy.

Many families need guidance about the healthiest food options available.

I am signing this letter asking you to send a memo to your members — chain supermarkets as well as independent grocers and corner stores — urging them to implement strategies to better market and highlight fruits and veggies and other healthy items at the store.

Healthy marketing strategies don't have to be intensive or costly. These shifts can also be good for your business. A recent report found that lower-calorie drinks and foods (including fruits and veggies) drove the bulk of sales growth for supermarket chains between 2009 and 2013.

Something as simple as labeling healthier options or adding green arrows on the floor to literally point the way to fruit and vegetable options is a big step in the right direction.
